Bringing the Best Desserts From Different Parts of the Country to Your Kitchen

When it comes to baking with passion, nothing beats the ladies of Hi-Five Doughnuts. After three years in the competitive doughnut industry, the veteran friends recognize the right combinations (date and dark chocolate chips; peanut butter and banana; chocolate and maple) but they do not shy away from developing creative new pairs on the fly. They are actually the creators of Hi-Five Doughnuts, a social media account on Instagram and the recipient of the "Ladiesoftheight" Instagram photo bow.

For their first creation, they created what they believe is the ultimate donut: savory donuts. What makes them unique is their use of flavors that complement each other rather than compete with one another. The result is an uncommon combination of sweet and savory flavors that melt in your mouth and leave you wanting more. With a large following on Instagram and Facebook, the owners knew they had something special in their hands, and so they teamed up with local chef Rob Collins to create their very first batch of their uniquely flavored creations.

The name "doughnut" is derived from the two words "dough" and "nut", thus creating a reference to the circular shape of these heavenly creations. These specialty products are handmade and made to order. It takes time for them to go from prototype to shop floor and back, which explains the long wait for your special treats. Customers love Hi-Five Doughnuts because they are made with real maple syrup, which gives them a richer, smoother taste than most other donuts out there. Customers also enjoy the variety of colors available in their creations, whether they be white or yellow, brown or dark.

For those who do not frequent the Louisville area but crave their sweet, homemade creations, there is another option. Kentucky Fried Chicken has started selling its own version of the popular doughnut. Made using genuine peanut butter and real flour, this is a tempting alternative for those who prefer a different flavor and presentation. In addition to the standard Kentucky fried chicken doughnut and glazed donuts, Kentucky Fried Chicken also offers glazed garlic bread, glazed turkey and glazed ham.

So what's so unique about these doughnuts? A traditional kettle doughnut is made with all natural butter, which makes for a softer and smoother texture. The use of shortening and lard gives it a longer shelf life, extending the life of the donut. By using natural butter, the sweet and melt-in-your mouth Kentucky fried chicken doughnut stays crunchy and fresh for up to two hours after being cooked on a hot grill. This, according to chef Karanja Deeter of Cards Restaurant in New York, is part of what makes the ketchup a "one-of-a-kind" food.

For an even bolder dose of seasoning, diners can add their choice of spicy mustard to their new custom donuts with unique glazes. According to chef Andrew Lewis of Bardstown Road Bakery & Deli in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, his doughnuts with a spicy mustard are "freshest sesame" sandwiches with an exotic ingredient. For inspiration, he often visits roadside bardstown road kitchens and talks with local cooks about what they make with special ingredients. With many restaurants now offering mobile cooking classes, Lewis knows that people in the area are "obsessed" with the idea of making donuts on the go.

Other hot new ingredients to get incorporated into the mix include karaoke berries, blueberries, cherries, strawberries, nuts, bacon, pineapple and mayonnaise. By substituting traditional ingredients for these more unique ones, diners can experience a car out with flavor as varied as the surrounding areas where they originally came from. In addition to using the classic ingredients, Lewis hopes that more creative cooks will create new ways to use donuts as a vehicle for a story within the dessert.

With locations in five states (including two each in Ohio and Kentucky), the Hi-Five Doughnuts food truck has already made a name for itself in some communities. Local stories about their donuts - including one that appeared in the Courier-News of Louisville, Kentucky - have also contributed to the business's national appeal. The fact that they come from a family of talented cooks is just part of what has made them so successful. For now, however, they continue to expand both in terms of location and menu items, as well as their customer base.
