What Are Hi-Five Doughnuts?

Hi-five Doughnuts is a small, locally owned establishment on Michigan's Portage River that serves up mouthwatering, specialty donuts, filled with sugary maple syrup and filled with the best tasting, freshest ingredients around. Owners Ron Boer and Kevin Nash have made a commitment to continually bring back the best tasting donuts they can to their loyal customers and loyal friends. For this reason, the donut business is always growing and maturing as the business is becoming a part of Portage's culture. It has become a local hangout for those who live and breathe Portage; especially for those people who have a passion for food and dessert!

A local favorite with its large customer base, Hi-Five Doughnuts is run by two individuals, RonBoer and Kevin Nash, who are also the founders of the soul food kitchen in the historic town of Portage, Indiana. This food truck started out as just a food trailer selling locally made donuts and coffee at various events, and slowly evolved into what it is today. Serving some of the best donuts, cakes, brownies, pies, and other delicious goodies, the food truck has expanded to include a full complement of exceptional food creations. Small local store offering custom donuts with special glaze & toppings, such as fried chicken, made just for them.

The Portage City History Center holds the original inventory of all the" Ding Dong" donuts that are part of the Hooper's Egg franchise. Many of the donuts from the early days of the company still exist today and are served at various Portage restaurants. In addition to regular old donuts, the Portage Company also offers an assortment of cakes and pastries. In addition to offering these delicious treats at their Hooper's Egg and Hoop Restaurant, many Portage restaurants and boutique hotels also offer their own take on the standard, American, classic font. Many specialty shops also offer their own take on the "ick" factor by offering their own interpretation of "doughnuts."

Perhaps the most famous of the "doughnut delights" is the Hi-5 Doughnut, which was inspired by the old-fashioned-style diner in which the women worked long hours in between meetings and delivering their doughnuts to the boss' house. The loaves of dark wood, glazed to perfection, contain a variety of fillings made from different fruits. Some of these fillings are made from strawberries, blueberries, and pineapple, while others are made of banana, chocolate, and even chocolate covered cherries! These fillings are usually combined with powdered sugar and sometimes nuts. These delicious brownies can be topped with maple or powdered sugar glaze.

The Hi-5's brownies and donuts are available in several different flavors. One is the "Baked Alaska", which has a mildly sweet glaze with an apple flavor. Another one is the "Sour Apple", which are half apple and half raspberry; and another is the "Chocolate Mocha". All of them have various fillings and glaze options and are available in different sizes.

In addition to being sold at conventional coffee shop and dinning establishments, they can also be found at various bookstores as well as on internet sites. A standard "brownie" may contain one or two pieces of bread doughnut with various fillings. For example, it may contain chocolate glaze, chopped fruit, raisins, blueberries, nuts, and whatever one chooses. They may also come in various "sizes" and "flavors". One "size" may contain about 2 tablespoons of filling or more, while a "sized" may contain about 1 tablespoon.

Some standard offerings include the following: "Creamy Coffee," "King-Creamy Coffee," "Chocolate Roasted," "Chocolate Mint," "Coffee and Chunk," "Doughnuts and Gravy," "FudgeSundae," "Fudgy French Fondue," " Guinness Caramel," " Maltese Dogs," "Pecan Rolls," "Pecan Ricotta," " Scotch Broiled," " Strawberry Shortcake," and "Tiramisu." There are also several varieties of specialty doughnuts. These include: black forest-chocolate pudding, banana split, dark chocolate pudding, chocolate peanut butter, coconut, and carrot cake. They also come in a variety of fillings. Some of these fillings include: chocolate, coffee, caramel, caramels, nutmeg, sugar, and lemon.

Hi-five doughnuts are popular not only for their delicious taste but also because of their unique design. For example, some come with a "coffee" ring; others come with "cherry" rings. In addition, they come in various colors. Chocolate browns and traditional reds are common, and so are blues and whites. Some may be filled with jelly or other fillings.
