Louisvillian Hi-5 Doughnuts

The owners of Hi-Five Doughnuts fame, they are known as the masters of the gourmet doughnut: Hi-Five Doughnuts. And with their many fearless creations from doughnuts to fudge and more, they have proven that they can create unrivaled gourmet greatness with just the finest of them all. That is why Top Chefminister Danny Wimmer hand selected the female chefs, Leslie Wilson and Annie Harlow to participate in this year's "Gourmet Woman Food" event for the past 2 years. And now, the fun doesn't stop there!

This past weekend, April 27th, there was a very successful open house for one of the most popular food trucks in the country, called the Hi-5 Doughnuts. I had the pleasure of watching one of their most popular creations, a triple chocolate brownie, which is filled with three large rich chocolate cookies and topped with an aromatic dark chocolate glaze. There was also a very interesting assortment of other specialty doughnuts, including one that looked like it had a brick in its crust. This particular doughnut was only available during the special events, so be sure to visit when you happen to pass by.

So where does the name Hi-5 come from? According to the official website of this extremely popular gourmet food truck/food franchise, it actually derives from two very popular food concepts. The first is a reference to an old arcade game played at the earliest African-American amusement park. The second concept is the origin of the name for Hi-5 Doughnuts.

Some of the earliest references to the name "Hi-5" are found in old newspapers, where it appears as "Hail-five-doughnuts," and "road-five-doughnuts." Supposedly (according to a former employee), the origin of this term may have been the idea of operating these doughnuts on the road. The road referred to would most likely have been a long dirt strip adjacent to the parking lot of the former Emperador Hotel, which is located at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 47th Street in New York City. That would be where the first female owned and operated doughnut food truck/restaurant operation began. It is still possible that she (or he) named this establishment as such because it served that purpose for several generations.

A trip down the road a few years later to see how things had progressed could be interesting. Today, you can find an amazing assortment of Hi-5 Doughnuts located in dozens of locations all throughout the United States. Although the original concept of creating fried buttermilk chicken doughnut franchised outlets might still be in play in some form somewhere, today's versions offer many more options. Perhaps it is their delicious and unique taste or perhaps it is their simple, down-to-earth appeal. Regardless of what contributed to the unique sales success of Hi5 Doughnuts, they have proven that they have staying power amongst discerning customers and they are certainly here to stay.

While many southern style restaurants offer donuts as an option for their customers, nothing compares to the exquisite offerings of the Louisville location of Hi-5 Doughnuts. The sweet and savory flavors created by the buttermilk chicken batter combined with hints of dark chocolate and butter compliment the original butter and chocolate flavor of the original so well it is difficult to imagine another establishment that serves this delightfully. For those lovers of sweet, addictive coffee or tea there is no substitute for these delicious creations when it comes to satisfying the sweet tooth. If you enjoy a sweet and sexy treat then these might be exactly what you need to feel that special occasion, party or gathering is complete.

In their earliest years, the business started out just as any other that was initially started in the early 1970s, out of a trailer. Employees were less than impressed by the operation of the business at first, but slowly word of mouth and word-of-mouth did improve the public's attitude towards this sweet treat. Over time, as with many successful businesses, the business was franchised to other regions of the country, allowing it to gain a larger retail presence. Today, Hi-5 Doughnuts operates in thirty-two states in the United States, so it has a strong foundation of support wherever it opens its doors.

While the business remains nearly five decades old, it is also known for providing a service that is not found at all times. Women have always been known for their love of donuts, so this is yet another reason to enjoy a delicious cup of your favorite treat. As with most other franchises, the drive-through is the best option for eating Hi-5 Doughnuts in Louisville, and it is the perfect way to experience what it is like to get your fill of this delicious product. If you find yourself in this situation, you may want to try other offerings from this hardworking establishment, including the original hot dog stand which is still running successfully. With so much support from the public, it is easy to see why the Hi-5 Doughnuts brand still remains as a cultural icon in southern cuisine to this day.
